Towards the end they started allowing people to take passes and trips during non school days. If you can get your unit to pay for a vehicle do it, if not make a friend with a car. It’s doable unless you buy a decent amount of stuff. PX is about the same distance in a different direction. Clothing and sales is a good walk away, 2-3 miles. When I was there 6 months ago, they were closed on the weekend. There’s a gas station about a half mile from the schoolhouse/barracks. To get to the school house it was 1-2 minute walk.
